Benino's Dream
with Antonio Damasco, Paola Bertello
Music by Gerardo Cardinale, Valerio Mosso
Everything begins with the magic/hieratic formula, at the table of the spoken tombola:
“Chesta è ‘a mano e chisto è ‘o culo r’ ‘o panaro.
Neh, ca ‘a mano è libbera, e ‘o pertuso appilato! Iammo bello!”
“ This is the hand of this one…and the back of the basket…
Look, this one has a free hand and a blocked hole! Come on babe!”
( Neapolitan dialect)
A poetic and funny plot where the Holy Family’s Story intertwines the everyone’s daily lives. So, here is the land made of cork and musk, shepherds and Magi, stories confusing holy and daily, until it is possible to see baked clay characters, between uncles and cousins, some of these ... or doing the same jobs of these ones: fishmonger, shoemaker or washerwoman.
The crib’s origin is Benin’s dream, who is sleeping in the stable and is telling us what happened to the Magi, which are the meanings of the characters in the crib and… why is "Totore” or “painter" ( in Italian language, pittore) so much similar to the landlord who denied hospitality to the Holy Family?
"It is useless to tell you that from 8th to 24th December almost all the families were "fighting "... inside and outside. Disagree about everything: the houses’ color, the shepherds’ sizes. Then, there were strong differences between the conservative ones, defenders of the eighteenth century tradition, and innovators, who wanted to put even Maradona between the ox and the donkey ... because he had really done so many miracles! ".
